Experience

Bob Williams specializes in energy litigation. His career has included serving as the general counsel of a publicly-traded midstream company, overseeing legal matters for the largest natural gas producer in the United States, managing disputes for an international infrastructure developer, and trying lawsuits and handling arbitrations for pipelines, power generators, and oil and gas producers.

Because he has viewed litigation from the client’s standpoint, Bob’s approach is practical and pragmatic, with an emphasis on avoiding any cost that does not materially increase the odds of success. The depth of his experience allows him to see the business implications as well as the legal issues inherent in any commercial dispute, often leading to a solution in which both sides win.

Bob understands that a favorable verdict is meaningless if the cost of the litigation exceeds the value at risk to the business. Consequently, he favors alternative fee arrangements that ensure that the fees incurred reflect the actual monetary risk faced by the company.

Background

Bob received his undergraduate and law degrees from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. He was an editor on the law review, and, following graduation, he clerked for a federal district court judge.

Bob has advised and represented corporations both as an in-house attorney and in private practice.

As general counsel for a $3 billion-plus midstream company, Bob was responsible for environmental, securities law compliance, governance, and general corporate matters. As deputy general counsel of the nation’s largest natural gas producer, Bob and his group provided legal support for the company’s business development, production, commercial, and pipeline activities, and successfully defended claims alleging wrongful deductions from royalties, trespass, property damage, improper contract termination, nuisance, lease termination, and breach of contract. As assistant general counsel for a developer of international energy assets, Bob resolved disputes – informally or through arbitration or litigation – involving projects in the United Kingdom, China, Brazil, and the Dominican Republic.

As a partner with Bracewell & Patterson LLP (now Bracewell LLP) and of counsel with other firms specializing in civil litigation, Bob arbitrated or litigated cases on behalf of diverse energy clients, including a producer, an interstate pipeline, and a power generator.

Bob joined Buck Keenan LLP in September 2019.
