Robert Paddock


Robert Paddock focuses his trial practice on energy related disputes. Robert has extensive experience handling disputes in almost every aspect of the upstream and midstream energy sectors. Robert has also handled a wide variety of cases involving corporate governance issues, joint ventures, business divorces, real estate investments, landlord/tenant, investor fraud, among other commercial dispute. Robert has tried cases in state and federal courts, arbitration proceedings and in bankruptcy courts. Cases Robert has handled have been featured in stories in The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Law 360, Texas Law Book and other publications. A sampling of cases he has handled are listed below.

Selected Experiences

  • In a dispute over the calculation of gathering rates under a gas gathering agreement, obtained a take-nothing award after a three-week arbitration in which the plaintiff sought damages of more than $200 million
  • Defended loan servicing company and major financial institution in a trial involving alleged misapplication of loan proceeds
  • Obtained temporary injunction against a defendant who misappropriated $2.5 million that was supposed to be used to acquire mineral interests
  • In connection with Lehman Brothers, Inc. bankruptcy, defended client against debtor’s claim to subordinate more than $40 million of his compensation; after a bankruptcy court trial, the court denied the subordination and allowed the claim
  • Represented an exploration and production company in litigation involving the interpretation and operation of a turnkey drilling contract
  • Extensive experience representing operators and non-operators in resolving joint operating agreement disputes
  • Obtained summary judgment in favor of a major energy company in its enforcement of its rights under a gas pipeline balancing agreement
  • Obtained substantial jury verdict for a client in case involving misrepresentations in a private placement memorandum submitted by a worldwide marketer of sporting goods
  • Represented building owners in lawsuits against general contractors and architects
  • As part of a massive Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceeding, represented numerous energy companies seeking recovery of claims against the debtor
  • Represented both landlords and tenants in litigation involving commercial lease enforcement issues

Prior to joining Buck Keenan LLP, Robert was a partner with Thompson & Knight LLP, where he practiced for 21 years. He received his J.D. from South Texas College of Law, where he served as a note and comment editor for the South Texas Law Review and earned a B.A. from Southern Methodist University. From 2004 to present, Robert has been recognized by his peers year after year by various publications as both a “Rising Star” and a “Super Lawyer.”

Robert is also actively involved in his community through, among other things, service on the board of Agape Development Ministries, The Children’s Fund, a partner/sponsor of The Downtown Tool Box Lunch Series, president and speaker chair of Madrugadores Breakfast Club, as well as an active member of Grace Bible Church. Outside of the office, Robert is kept busy with his wife and three kids.
